Class last night

Sunday night class last night was pretty cool. I am really blessed to be able to teach it; it's helped me tremendously, and I hope it's helped my youth group as well.

Last week we had started talking about witnessing. I wanted to go through the subject because we haven't studied it in a long time, not in class anyway. Dusty and Chris teach a tract time at church camp called "Extreme Evangelism - They Don't Serve Breakfast in Hell", but not all of our youth have taken it; and some probably needed a refresher.

So we've been discussing witnessing, and it's a lot of fun. Last night we continued something we'd started last week. I had been having people give the references to Bible verses that might be useful in witnessing. Last week we'd gotten the basic verses of the Roman Road: Romans 3:23, 6:23, 5:8, and 10:9. Those verses are the most popular to use in witnessing, and don't get me wrong, I think they're great and we should absolutely know them and use them. But I wanted to see what else the youth would come up with for witnessing verses.

Over about 30 minutes, they pretty much blew me away. They listed some more obvious ones: Acts 16:31, Ephesians 2:8, John 3:16. But most of them were leafing through their Bibles looking for more references while others shared theirs, and they found verse after verse that could be used in sharing the Gospel. Stuff like John 10:9-10, Isaiah 55:6-7, Matthew 1:21, and on and on.

Many of them didn't just share a pertinent verse; they would also explain why the verse might be useful in a witnessing opportunity. That really blessed me too, because one of my major goals as I teach Sunday night class is that the youth not merely learn stuff, but learn how to apply it and use it in their lives.

We had a really good time and came up with far more verses than I had ever imagined. Hannah's going to type them up and let everybody have copies next week, so that they can look at the verses further and hopefully memorize them (I encourage that). Also next week, we're going to discuss different questions or issues that might come up while you're witnessing to someone, and we'll do some scenarios. That's right, situations where people like Dusty or Chris or Jordan or Trevor or whoever can both practice and demonstrate ways to witness.

It's pretty cool to see the youth getting into this; evangelism is one of the most important things we can talk about and do, and I hope and pray they're seeing the importance. I'm looking forward to class on Sunday night. Thank You, God, for giving me a youth group that seeks to know You and Your Word better, and for the opportunity to teach them what little I know!

That's cool, that you're having people find different verses. I get tired of hearing people's witnessing formulas "Five easy steps to tell someone about God" type things. I don't think they are wrong, exactly, but that most people find it easy to get caught up in learning the formulas and don't really study the Bible for themselves, beyond the verses on the Roman Road or something.
Even a non believer could recite the standard verses, there's no passion required for that...
So, it sounds like what you're doing is pretty neat, if it gets your youth to dig into the Word and really think about what it says.
I love you, Luke, and I'm proud of you.

yeah it was really cool... except, if you've noticed, I don't have a voice in youth class... :P lol! But your wonderful sis is nice enough to be one for me... :P
Anyway yeah it was really cool I'm glad you're doing this in class it's really good...
And I think memorizing is a really good idea because a lot of times when people witness you don't have a Bible or a list of Scriptures with you so you have to be able to quote...

Man, sounds awesome! Wish I could be there!

Meggy,
I wish you could've been there too... :(
Anyways, yeah, it was sweetness....
Luke...about the description thing. "No one would fear the 'Dread Pirate Wesley'"....:P I like it!!!! At least, the beginning...didn't read all of it.
Hey, you should let me design you a template... :)

Luke Hobbs said...

Thanks for the encouragement, guys (or I suppose I should say ladies and my beloved Lady Lana).

Hannah, I wouldn't be opposed to you designing me a template; generate one and I'll tell you if it works.

Emma said...

Hannah please DO design a template for him... one of my pet peeves is undesigned blogs... :P it's like, "aughh!!! I wanna fix it!" :P
~Emy

Luke Hobbs said...

My blog is part of your pet peeve, Emy? What in the world is wrong with the thing? It ain't the most beautiful creation ever concocted, but it's not ugly either (at least, I don't think so, but then again, what do I know, I'm only set to marry the most beautiful girl on the planet). All the green happens to fit a certain movie I know of.

I like your blog, Luke, I wouldn't like you to change it. I mean, you can and of course I'll still like it, it's just that, this one is simple but nice.
Fancy templates are all right, but in my opinion, they usually make the writing more difficult to read, and I already have some problems with my eyesight making it difficult to see computer screens...
(sometimes, emma, I cannot read your blog...)

Emma said...

Luke, um, I just meant that... ever since I taught myself how to design blogs, ones that are generic and not personally designed bug me... :P (no offense guys... they still look good)... that's all I meant. I don't know what you mean about green unless you're making some reference to HUNTED????????
Lana, oh I'm so sorry it's hard for you to read my blog!!! :( But... I *like* the flashing hearts... :( Sorry... I'll try to always make sure the font and color of the words are easy to read, ok?
Okay guys... Meggy asked, what does she have to do to make me read "The Hobbit"... so I said she had to answer these questions first of all. :P She affirmed what you, Luke, said about the Bible being much more violent than "The Hobbit", and she affirmed that it's a childrens book like NARNIA and Luke if you're still up to the promise that if I read it and don't like it you won't bother me anymore about reading LOTR... then maybe, just maybe I'll do it... I asked her if I read "The Hobbit" if that would mean that I'd read something LOTR and she said yes... :( That's the only bad thing about it... why, you ask? She did too... because then you can all say "I TOLD YOU SO"!!!!!! But she said she won't.... so if the rest of ya'll won't, then I'll think about it... Luke isn't that the book that you said I needed to read one day before SS started for some reason?? I had never heard of it then but I think that's what you were talking about.... anyway, I'll leave ya'll alone now. :P

This is when I miss having a youth group. But it is best, of course, b/c God promised as much in His word. Nan would you please e-mail me the list you make up? God soooooo good. Yeah! B/c of this post I am happified. I know I am weird but reading such things excite me. What can I say? ;K

Anonymous said...

Lady,
Yeah, I'll email it to you. :)
Luke,
Okay dokay. For that wonderful thing, though, I WILL need your password. :) But, I promise you can change it when I'm done.
Lana,
But, if I get to design him a template...I can educate my brother in the way of putting things on here. :P :P Just kidding, Luke. Anyways, yeah.
Alright, gotta go,
Hannah

educate him in the way of putting things on here???

How do you design templates anyway??

And when you make that list, I'd like to have a copy, too, it sounds like it could be really helpful... We might could print it in CtB...

Luke Hobbs said...

Emy, in the interest of full disclosure, the other major concern you might have with the Hobbit (and LOTR) is that it contains a wizard (wizards). A good wizard (incredibly awesome), that is.

And the Bible, as you are no doubt aware, prohibits all wizardry and witchcraft. However, both Tolkien and I would argue that these figures in his tales which he calls "wizards" are NOT wizards in the normal sense. They're not actually human, first of all, and they don't "practice magic" either. And, well, it's extremely complicated to explain, and even more so when you haven't read Tolkien. I figured I'd let you know that, but I encourage you to read at least TH and see for yourself. Then, if you need explanans, let me know and I'll be happy to dissect the matter of the Istari for you. Oh, and yes, my promise still stands. But you simply must read The Hobbit, yess precious, it's your destiny, gollum!

Nan, not sure about the template thing. Maybe you could show me what it potentially could look like? Not too keen on changing my password, either; I always use a variant of the same obscure word.

Emma said...

Warrior,
Thanks for letting me know about the wizard, though I don't think it's much of a problem as long as he is a *good* wizard. After all, there was much magic in NARNIA, you know.
So maybe I will still read it... if ya'll are sure you'll explain it if I don't understand. Being that the only fantasy of that sort that I've read is NARNIA I may find it a bit confusing. Although I'm guessing that as in NARNIA, there's going to be some things that just don't make sense but you have to accept them b/c they're not in this world... no? Wow you know ya'll have really changed me... was it just a few short months ago I was arguing intently that there's "no such thing as other worlds" and that it was all dumb?? :P Dearme, ya'll have a way of influencing me so easily... *sigh*
It's my destiny, hm? Well thankfully Hannah's quoted that before or I'd have been quite disturbed by that sentence. :P lol... (Hannah! Liars go to hell... and that's not a very nice place, is it precious? :P)

Anyhow... oh and btw, Lana, to answer your question, designing templates.... ooh fun! ;D On HSB we just have the HTML section to work with (apart from the generic templates you can choose from, of course) and you can get the codes to upload pictures, change the colors, and do all kinds of awesome things. ;D I think on blogger you have the same thing but it's also easier to change pics and stuff...

Emma said...

WOAH!!!!!!!!! Wait a minute!!!! GOLLUM???????? You mean you just called me that ugly little brown alien-looking thing??? How darest thou! I am deeply offended! First I sound like a snob, and now this! Dearme....
:P

Luke Hobbs said...

Well, if you've read The Hobbit (and LOTR), you'd know that I couldn't have called you Gollum; it was more like I was impersonating G.

And I encourage you to read Tolkien if for no other reason than that you need to actually experience what "that ugly little brown alien-looking thing" is all about.

Unknown said...

See, Emma, gollum is always saying "gollum" it's a sound he makes. Luke was *being* gollum, not calling you it.

But, my love, I think the "destiny" thing was taking it a bit far. Emy has just recovered from the shock of liking Narnia and discovering other worlds. Let's ease her into middle earth, shall we?
Just read the hobbit and then we'll see, Emma, we'll see...

Emma said...

Oh, okay *sigh of relief* as long as you weren't *calling* ME that thing... I'm not saying he's bad I've heard enough from Meggy to know he's not but that does NOT mean I want to be called him!!
The destiny thing was okay, it was funny, but thinking that you were calling me a weird creature wasn't.. :P
~Emy
p.s. shouldn't you two be at school? instead you (at least you Lana) have been on the compy all morning! LOL :P

Anonymous said...

Ok, here's something all yall should know that Emy's not telling you. She's already agreed to read the Hobbit! I called her on the phone and she said she would as long as I didn't say, "I told you" when she loves it. Just thought I'd spill the beans...

Anonymous said...

woah now wait a minute there Meggy!!!! I said I *would think about it* as long as you didn't say "I told you so" *if* I love it... I said I'd THINK ABOUT IT... but as influencing as ya'll are and as ductile as I am and from the past.... I prolly will end up reading it, sadly enough. :P
~Emy

Anonymous said...

Nononononono! You said you would read it! You said "ok" and that closed the subject and you also said it when I gave you your every-two-day assignments! That twice you said you would!

Luke Hobbs said...

I'll bring it tonight.

Unknown said...

I have not been on all morning! I did get out of spanish after only 15 minutes, (the class is an hour and fifteen minutes long) so I commented at times I usually wouldn't...

Emma said...

Now Meggy I said "ok" meaning I would think about it... b/c when you informed me that reading it means I've read something LOTR, I said maybe I wouldn't think about it, b/c ya'll would all be saying "I told you so"... then you said you wouldn't so I said I *would* think about it...
goodness... we need to record our phone conversations or something??? :P *JK*!!
Oh, dear... *too bad* you forgot it Luke... :P LOL!!!
~Emy

Hannah Hobbs said...

Wow....y'all are REALLY sad.
Anyways, Luke, for the template I'm thinking up...well, let's say it combines some of your favorite things: Lotr, music, Tolkien, Lewis, and Lana...be happy. :P
But, you don't have to change your password...I figured out how to mess with it on another blog of mine...and I know what obscure word it is!!!!! :P :P :P Really, I do...
~Hannah

Luke Hobbs said...

Well, now you know how to break into my school account and bank stuff, I guess.

Why don't you just do a totally Lana-themed template? That would rock. Speaking of which, darling, I need a bunch more pictures of you. Like, tons. Just can't be content with the ones I've got, I guess.

Unknown said...

Your mom told me the word like, before we even started going to UAFS together... It's no secret, darling.

Do you mean you want to take more, or do you mean I need to give you more??
Give, take I don't care...
I just don't have a plethora of good pictures of me.
Oh dear, Luke my love, speaking of pictures, please do NOT let me forget to take that picture of the wall for CtB! I have GOT to get it tomorrow!

Emma said...

hahaha, a Lana-themed template!!! :P LOL!!!! hahaha.... okay sorry that was just *so* something you'd say Luke... :P I mean, you did say it... but... never mind. Anyway that's funny... :P
~Emy

Hannah Hobbs said...

Luke,
Okay, I'll work on that, then...
Yeah, I second that for pictures, Lana... :)
Anyways, Luke, you need to post...
I need to too...just...don't want to, yet.
Namarie,
Hannah

Luke Hobbs said...

My mom is so good at keeping secrets. Good gracious, she told you that before we started going to UAFS? I keep forgetting that it's Dad, not Mom, who's the professional secret-keeper in our family. Some of their children have inherited his tendency, while others have inherited hers; no further comment on that at this time.

I obviously do need to post; this is the 31st comment now. That's insane. But I'm about to be working, so maybe I can post tonight.

GASP!!!!!!!!! At my library I found a Tolkein book I had never heard of!!!!!!!!! How does THAT hapen!!!!!!! It's THE CHILDREN OF HURIN I believe. Sound familiar anyone? Haven't heard it mentioned by any of yall avid Tolkien fans.

Luke Hobbs said...

It's brand new, just published this year. Well, not really brand new, obviously, since Tolkien's been dead since 1973. But yeah, the short version of it is included as one of the chapters of The Silmarillion. He never finished editing and putting together Children of Hurin, so his son Christopher got it into publishable form. It's dark, intense, and, well, don't want to give it away, but yeah. Incredible story and awesomely written, though.

Anonymous said...

woah the first part of that comment really stunned me... :P I thought, "Isn't he DEAD????"! :P I though I was sooo confused.... how were the thousands of Baby Ruths and quarters??? :P
~Emy

Darling, your comment section has gotten fairly well out of control, this'll be the thirty-fifth comment! Yours is the most popular blog in our little circle, to be sure.
Emma- quarters? I'm lost!
Everybody, I just looked at all these comments and noticed something: we talk about LOTR entirely too much, this started as a nice post about the Bible, and now we've got dozens of comments about middle earth and such. (I know, I'm just as bad about it as everybody else...)

Luke Hobbs said...

Heeheehee, quarters. Yeah, I got a Frito chili pie tonight from our lovely ladies at the concession table, paid a ten and had to get a bunch of quarters back as part of my change because they were almost out of ones. So I got four mini-Baby Ruths, since those were two for a quarter, and told them to keep fifty cents.

The Baby Ruths were good, Emy; I ate three and Mom ate one. There's one sitting on my desk right now and I really have no idea how it got here.

Emma said...

hahahaha ask your little bros, Warrior, they took a bunch home... :P lol....
yeah thanks for explaining the quarters lol... it was a really random comment, I'm sorry, but I couldn't resist... :P
Lana sorry, I'm the one (ironically) who started the LOTR conversation.... :P but ya know, I had to ask... :P
Yeah Luke, you must be really interesting... or at least the conversations in your comment section are... this is 37. :P

Lady of somethin' er 'nother... said...

Oo! Oo! I am 38. I truly wonder how many comments you can get on here before you post agian. Quarters. Um they had to give me change in quarters. It turns out that my sibs wanted more to eat later and we traded them back, for cheese puffs I beleive, to the utter delight of your sister. LoL

Hehehehehe...
Yeah, that's right, Lady. :)
Anyways, Luke POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Done. And this is comment number forty, BTW. Insanity...

I know, 40 comments looks better than 41.... sorry. But, I have to say that it's not quite insanity... I think it's quite awesome. :P Blogging and i-net rocks!!!!
